We took a day trip the first Saturday to Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "de Shay") ,
in eastern Arizona. The canyon is in the heart of the large Navajo Reservation and
is central to the history of the Navajo People. In the sad history of our government's
dealings with the Native Americans, this is the area where thousands of Navajo were
forced to march hundreds of miles to a desolate compound in central New Mexico.
Known as "The Long Walk" in Navajo history, hundreds died along the way.
Eventually, the present large reservation was created and they were allowed to return
to their homeland.
